“What do you even do all day?”
The less people understand what you do, the more valuable the role is. If you can tell someone else exactly what to do, and why, you are leading.
Leading means being focused on the future. It means breaking away from what has come before, and skating to where the puck is going. In an unkown future, it can feel safe to stick with the comfort of the known.
Instead, you can dive directly into the unknown and get comfortable with it. You will constantly be asking new questions, and it won’t be immediately clear that you’re going to make it out. But as you start to create definition for yourself and the role, you start to create new value. You begin to map out where to go. You begin to map out where the opportunities are, and where they aren’t. You start to see a new vision. One that nobody who hasn’t embraced uncertainty could see. Uncertainty is a great starting place for discovery.
Opportunities exist everywhere. It just so happens that they don’t exist where everyone thinks they are. People think that the opportunity is in the known. Opportunity is in the unknown.
Comfort Zones are real. Breaking them is… uncomfortable for a reason. They stretch you beyond yourself. Each leap forward is a new step into uncertainty. Your capacity grows the moment you get into the process of continually stepping outside of the known and into uncertainty.
Better to step out than be pushed out.
