Hey!
Now that it’s Q4, here’s something to consider…
How do you rebuild a plane while it’s flying (or falling) in mid-air?
The answer is piece by piece, not all at once.
Two of my clients recently took over businesses. One bought a company and the other stepped into the CEO seat after being a longstanding operator.
With so much suddenly to take on, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by priorities. Every aspect of the business needs attention and there are so many different issues to react to. It’s a natural reaction to just try and “fix” everything all at once. You go scorched earth.
Here are some problems with that…
It takes time for teams and your company to digest changes to the org.
When you change too many things at once, it’s hard to know what’s working and what’s not.
It overcomplicates communication and direction
This is just as true for our personal growth as it is our business growth.
Here’s a simple reframe that can help you get where you’re going.
Ask yourself: What if I had 100 quarters to become the person I want to become? Or build the company that I want to build?
What would it look like if I was able to focus on just building and improving one quarter at a time?
Next quarter is 1/100 or maybe you’re already at 7/100.
If every quarter you make a few major improvements to your business, or to your life, things begin to really stack up…
In one company, we began department by department.
First cleaning up sales and marketing, then moving on to settling into a new office, then to tech & data and right now the finance department is still a bit of mess but that will come along, too…
Each and every quarter there is the opportunity to make a few changes, a few improvements that make the fundamentals of your business or life better.
So, pick 1-4 things you want to transform in the quarter ahead.
Which areas of your life or business aren’t working the way you should, and how can you focus just on a few of those?
If tomorrow were the start of 100 quarters of growth and improvement, what few things would you choose to accomplish in the next quarter?
And for Founders trying to “do it all” it might help knowing you have many, many more quarters ahead to get to everything.
Time is your friend, not your enemy when you work with it in that way.
As always, let me know how I can help,
xx David
